CHURCH HISTORY

1892-2013

The Citrograph newspaper first places the Second Baptist Church on Orange Street in 1891. In 1892, Reverend Sebron Lee became the first pastor of the Second Baptist Church congregation. Early founders were: Deacon J.A. Whiteside, Turner Berry, J. Jackson, E. Brown, F. Wilkerson, Jas R. Bush, Mrs. Shepard, Mrs. C. Jackson, Mrs. C.F. Smith, and Mrs. Fraley.

The late Deacon Emeritus, Joe Butler, Sr.,  recalled the move from State Street to Stuart Avenue by 1924.  Our present  location (9th and  Stuart) was purchased for $l0.00.  Historically known for Her indigenous faith  and cultural style of celebration,  the worship at Second Baptist (preaching/teaching, praise, prayer and singing) are significant factors to her social and spiritual existence. Thirty-three pastors have served the historic congregation.  Pastor Anthony W.
